Each year I have added more and more scaffolding to the assignment, learning as I go. I feel like this year I finally got it right, so I wanted to share. __________________________________________________Students make a copy of this document, pictured below. For homework, they insert the 3 required pictures in the boxes. The following day I teach kids how to insert a picture of themselves in Google Drive if they weren't able to figure it out. (File > Insert image > Camera > Allow) In class, I give them 3 graphic organizers on paper to avoid flipping back and forth between tabs.
Students help me fill out a sample one on the board, using a picture I chose, and then they fill in their own. Once they have completed all three, they begin typing. For students who need even more support, I will help them color-code like-ideas so they can put them into sentences together. Here's a final product. It's not perfect, but it is much better than a lot of work I've gotten in the past. Implementing the graphic organizer like this, and making them find pictures at home has cut down on the amount of class time we need, because when they finally get to the writing part, it goes much more quickly!
